OUR WEEK OF WORKSHOPS

Monday 21st October

English Tales

We are a country rich in folktales and legends.  During the workshop our young writers will be introduced to two folktales (of course they feature monsters!) which we will discuss and dissect. We will then plot and write our very own English folktales. (workshop leader: Helena)

BOTH CLASSES FULLY BOOKED

Tuesday 22nd October

A Modern Classic

In this workshop we promote our love of reading by looking at a modern classic – we will discuss the story and the characters and read extracts from it. The children’s creativity will then be set free to write their very own timeless classic.  We hope all the children will go away wanting to read and write for pleasure! (workshop leader: Helena)

BOTH CLASSES FULLY BOOKED

Thursday 24th October

A Mexican Halloween

In this workshop we will be packing our imaginary bags and travelling to Mexico! We will arrive on the Day of the Dead, a three day celebration that starts on the 31st of October. With a little help from music and props we will stroll through the carnival atmosphere of the streets. We will let the children’s imagination run wild,  creating characters and stories that are very much alive on the page.  (workshop leader: Angels)

Friday 25th October

The Lost Words

This workshop focuses on vocabulary building. In a modern world where children do not always have the freedom of outdoors, we are finding that words of the natural world (names of plants, birds and the outdoors) which were common not so long ago are disappearing with time. Poet, Robert Macfarlane, in his beautifully illustrated book ‘The Lost Words’, has tried to keep these words alive and to ‘re-wild’ the language of children. Through readings and games (outdoors!), we will be championing lost words and turning them into equally beautiful poems of our own to treasure forever.  (workshop leader: Angels)
