This week, with my tutees, we have written stories as presents for their parents or grandparents. They have all enjoyed writing them and the sense of achievement when they have finished and hear their story read back to them is heart-warming. They have gone home with their stories safely tucked in an envelope, beaming!
For this activity you just have to give the child an rough idea of the story and then they write it. For our stories we have written them with the child as the main character, being woken up to a strange noise on Christmas Eve. The rest of the story is up to them, but you can give them a skeleton idea if they get stuck. If you sit next to them, you can prompt them with good adjectives, similes and adverbs to bring their stories to life. A bit of play-acting always helps their imagination to flow too. I have done several Santa impressions this week and many strange facial expressions! They tend to want to get all their spelling correct, if it is for a present but try not to let them get too hung up on it, they should just enjoy writing it and adding some special ‘ingredients’ to make their relatives smile! Of course, they can illustrate and decorate it too.
Have Fun!
