No pocket money? Creative ideas for Mother’s Day Gifts from the heart….

Dear Story Room kids,

happy-mothers-day-moyemediaThe supermarkets are awash with pink cards, pink teddies and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. But as a mother, I know that your mum would be happier with something that you had made yourself. So here are some writing ideas that you could make into a gift for your mum to cherish for years to come.

Create an Acrostic poem. Write either the word MOTHER, I LOVE MUM or Mum’s name down the side of a page … Like this:

M

O

T

H

E

R

and for each letter, think of something NICE  to say about your mum! Decorate it with drawings or photos. You could even put it in a cheap frame. You can read it out to her over breakfast or before she gets out of bed in the morning!

Be a journalist for a day. Write a newspaper article, front page news, about the discovery that the best mum in the world lives at your address! You can add photos, drawings,  interviews with witnesses… brothers, sisters, friends, grandparents etc…. just like a real newspaper article. Set it up on the breakfast table like a regular newspaper with her breakfast ready.

You could write your mum a story about a super-hero(ine) i.e. her! Or maybe a comic strip…. Think about all the times she has rescued you; brought you your lunch/homework/P.E. Kit to school that you left at home, picked you up when you fell down, made you feel better when you were ill.

I am sure every mother would love to receive a poem about themselves. Think of a meaningful title and then tell her how you feel about her and the things she does for you. You could start every sentence with ‘I love…’ . Remember, poems do not have to rhyme.

Have fun! Don’t worry if you haven’t written many stories or poems before or if you are not a great speller, just let your love for your mum shine through and enjoy creating your present.
