I love writing poetry with children as they are FANTASTIC at it. I am always amazed at what the children produce in our workshops and how much they ALL love writing poetry. They are never quieter or more engaged than when they are looking and listening for inspiration for their poetry.
We looked at comparison poems in our last workshop and I asked the children to choose their favourite lines from the poem they had written and then we put all the lines together in one BIG class poem. Here are the results. I am sure you will agree, they are pretty impressive.
This poem is written by the younger children, aged 7-9 years.
What Are Clouds?
Clouds are grey sheep wandering across the earth,
spring leaves sprouting out of their buds,
rhinos raging through the sky,
big cauliflowers.
Clouds are grey and stormy like angry elephants,
hundreds of sheep without legs,
white t-shirts flying in the sky,
silky milk.
Clouds are towers with turrets white and grey,
a giant shouting ‘Fi Fi Fo Fum!’
islands in-between the blue sky rivers
a big comfy carpet.
Clouds are like mashed potato and some people think it is ice-cream,
or in a funfair, the candyfloss in the machine.
We love Clouds.

The Sky and Clouds
The sky is a blue sheet covering the world,
blue paper with white fluffy fluff stuck gently on top,
The sky is a never-ending field of sweet forget-me-nots,
a long thick scarf wrapped tightly around the world as a neck.
The clouds are whipped cream on a large blue cake,
the inside of a coconut trickling in all directions.
The clouds are a gentle dove soaring through the sky,
a vicious, menacing polar bear stalking its prey.
The clouds are golf balls
thrown up into the blue sky,
white ghosts flying in the blueberry sky,
Grey clouds are pigeons flying across the sky
leaving a trail of thunder in its wake.
Clouds are the waves of white whales.
