The Surprises of the pond – by Joseph aged 9

The pond has many surprises

The mallard with his two toned head,

Soars down and skims across the rippled surface,

Foraging for food, as if apple bobbing,

The glides across to his mate.

Frogspawn as squidgey as jelly,

And as soft as a sponge

Part formed tadpoles like eels, as slippery as butter,

Then transformed into a frog with hinged limbs that open and shut like a door.

But in the misty sky darts a metallic blue dragonfly, its wings as crisp as snow, peeping at the surprises in

the slimy, ozzy green pond.
