In our ‘Let is Snow’ workshop the children came up with some lovely ideas of how to describe snow to our alien friends, from a lovely warm planet, in another galaxy!
Jackie and I have been in communication with the Aliens (translating their strange written language) and we have told them about these amazing descriptions.
Here is what they said:
Dear Earthlings,
We were delighted to hear that we will be welcome on your cold and wet land. We could not imagine what it would be like to visit a land where the sun shines so rarely. We were intrigued and mystified by your descriptions of cold and are eager (though, at the same time, somewhat apprehensive) to experience it ourselves. You told us that when you first step out in the cold that it feels like you have been punched in the stomach and it takes your breath away. The cold turns your human lips blue, and your teeth rattle and when you breathe it looks like smoke from a chimney. Others said that your breath made you look like a ghost in a cloud. You also told us that the cold makes your hands and feet go numb, like when you have pins and needles. Going out in the cold sounds like a frightening, tortuous experience but when you described snow we then understood why you took this risk. This substance you call ‘snow’ sounds divine.
The snow sounds good enough to eat, though you advised us against it. The snow falls like flour from the sky. When it settles it is as if icing-sugar has covered the ground, making it look like a big birthday or wedding cake. The snow sparkles like sugar in the weak winter sun (when it makes an appearance). The snow covered trees look like giant wedding dresses and the gravestones look like large delicious marshmallows. The snow is like toasted marshmallows crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We love toasted marshmallows, so will love the snow! You described how when this large blanket covers your land, everything sounds muffled, still and silent. When you walk on it your feet sink and they crunch, just like on a beach, and the footprints decorate the ground.
The frost sounds magical, decorating your windows like delicate crystal drawings and the ice turns lakes into slippery surfaces like glass. The icicles hanging from trees and buildings are like sharp sharks teeth.
We will take your wise advice and pack the items of warm clothing you suggest.
Thank you for your lovely descriptions.
Your new friends,
The Aliens (from the lovely warm planet)
