Pelican by Celia Warren
I like this poem because it is about words. We think it is about Pelicans or birds because the title is ‘Pelican’ and Celia Warren repeats the word lots of times in the poem. In the poem she is speaking to the Pelican about words. The poet shares a list of tricky words which are her favourite: dodecahedron, paprika, chameleon, rose and sycamore. I think they are her favourite words because she likes the sound of them.
She imagines that the Pelican would like to speak English and she imagines he keeps his words in his big beak. When I see a Pelican now I will think about all the words in his beak.
I like that this poem rhymes (every other line) as not all poems rhyme.
This poem made me think that even though Pelicans aren’t the most common birds and are ‘ungainly and cumbersome’ and ‘not pretty’ they are really cool and special. It also made me think about all the words that are in the world and which ones are my favourite words: diminuendo, zone, magic, crescendo and last but not least, cuddles!
